c: occupational therapy

we received your evaluation from argie this past week and you had your first session with her on wednesday.  we couldn't be happier with our decision to have you evaluated; we just hope we didn't wait too long.

argie's evaluation was interesting, made mommy a tad bit sad, but ultimately gave her hope for your future all at the same time!

here are some of argie's findings (it's hard to see it all in one place--there are SO MANY things you are good at, seeing all your weaknesses at once, makes mommy sad):

...you should be able to pedal a tricycle by age 3
...you are at the low end of "normal muscle tone"
...you have decreased strength in your upper and lower extremities and in your trunk
...you appear to fatigue easily and don't keep up with your peers during physical activities (/have low endurance)
...you still have three reflexes present that should have been integrated by 6 months of age: the asymmetrical tonic neck reflex, the symmetrical tonic neck reflex and the moro reflex, which means:
...you may have difficulty with copying symmetrical figures like in the VMI, crossing midline, poor eye tracking especially across the midline, learning to ride a bike, skipping, copying from the board and putting thoughts on paper (ATNR)
...you may use one hand for cutting and the other for writing and/or write with one hand and be dominant with the opposite foot or use the right and left hands interchangeably for the same task; have poor handwriting; have poor ocular pursuit movements (needed for reading left to right); have difficulty crossing midline; have visual-perceptual difficulties especially in symmetrical representation of figures (STNR)
...you may experience fear of new things; have difficulty with changes in routine; may want to be the "boss" during play activities or may be withdrawn when around peers (observe but don't play) and/or may be hypersensitive, immature and/or over-reactive (Moro)
...you are experiencing difficulties modulating sensory information like other children your age through your vestibular, visual and auditory systems, based on a questionnaire mommy filled out and qualify for OT.
...you don't have a hand preference and you don't have a consistent static tripod grasp and you scored below average on three tests that help assess fine motor skills.
...you WERE able to draw a picture of yourself and write the first two letters of your name which mommy was surprised by! AND you were able to do a little cutting, which was another surprise.  :)  so i guess it's not all bad.  ;)
...you had difficulty following 2-3 step instructions.

the "good" news: your therapeutic prognosis is "good".  however, there was an "excellent" option, so mommy's not sure why you didn't get that high of a score.  but i suppose it's good to set fair expectations.

mommy and daddy are supposed to read two books (The Out of Sync Child and Sensational Kids) which should arrive this week from amazon.  also, mommy (and the teachers when you are at school) is supposed to brush you and apply joint compressions every two hours.  that's a little more than what i was expecting--brushing?  really?  for a "typical" child? BUT argie, explained that it can help rewire things in your brain.  i'm trying to remember every two hours, but i'm not being very successful.  maybe there's an app for that.  ;)

i love you, my boy!  just the way you are!  but i do hope that we have intervened early enough where you can build confidence in these basic skills that will play a big part in your early school days.  we just want to build fluency so when you are faced with a "difficult" task, you aren't completely defeated because you lack the hand strength to hold the pencil correctly.
